Welcome to Squirrel

Welcome to Squirrel class

We are a Key Stage 3 class of 7 pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9.

The staff are Miss Rodgers (teacher), Mrs Moorcroft (1:1 teaching assistant Mon-Wed) and Mrs Egan (1:1 teaching assistant Thurs-Fri), Ms McLarney (teaching assistant Mon-Fri) and Miss Lythgoe (1:1 teaching assistant Mon-Fri)

In Squirrel class we us a themed based curriculum that incorporates the development of independence skills. We have a different theme each term that links in with most subject areas, making the curriculum immersive, practical and engaging.  We also take part in weekly phonics sessions and have a fine motor skills, reading and handwriting focus several afternoons a week.

We will be going shopping every two weeks to buy our class snack and to use our independence and money skills in a practical setting. This will likely be on a Thursday morning and will start as soon as we can, after a short transition period. We ask for a voluntary donation of £1 each week to cover the cost of snack, which we have each afternoon. Our snack time usually consists of fruit and other healthy options, and it is an opportunity to develop social skills and independence amongst out students. On the weeks that we are not out shopping in the community, we will be holding our own class 'cafe' where the students will take on a variety of roles, such as the waiter, chef and cleaner.

PE is on a Friday morning, so that is the day that our students will require their PE kit. Please can students come into school wearing appropriate PE kit on a Friday.

Each student in Squirrel class is given a home-school book. This is a way of communicating any important messages and information between home and school. There will also be appropriate weekly homework sent home on a Friday, due to be returned to school on a Monday please.

Each week Squirrel class take part in ‘Big Sing’ and merit assemblies, which are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our students and share our talents. Please use the Evidence for Learning app to see what our students get up to each week in school!

We are looking forward to having an exciting year!
