Autumn 1

English – Holiday research

In English our topic this half term has been ‘holidays’. As part of this we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages of foreign holidays and staycations. Individually, students carried out research on a country of their choice, used a holiday booking site to plan each step of their holiday to their chosen destination, familiarised ourselves with trip advisor and used the information available to review their hotel and research excursions. The only downside was that we couldn’t go ahead with each booking!

English – Presentations

As part of our spoken language task students were asked to research and prepare a power point presentation which either encourages or discourages people to have a staycation in Warrington. The presentations were fabulous and included a variety of text, images and animation. Pupils all convinced their peers and staff that Warrington has lots to offer and people should visit popular attractions such as Walton Gardens, Police Museum and Cineworld. Students all gave detailed descriptions of activities at each attraction, cost, location, historical information and personal experiences.

Maths

In Maths, we have focused on aspects of number. This has included place value, rounding, estimating, multiplication and much more. Our lessons generally include a group game which encourages rapid recall of mathematical facts using whiteboards and number fans to ‘show me’, loop games or online quizzes such as ‘Blooket’. This is a class favourite and is similar to ‘who wants to be a millionaire’, the competition for 1st place is tough! Students have all completed relevant component papers and end of unit assessments which contribute to the maths accreditation.
