Literacy spring 1

In Literacy this half term, Butterfly class have covered a range of story books linked to our topic of Animals and their Habitats. From ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ to ‘Dear Zoo’, the children have enjoyed sensory linked and practical ways to engage with and retell the narratives. We have also been working hard as a class to be more confident in our writing by practicing pencil control and using a variety of tools to mark make for different purposes.

Mathematics: spring 1

In Mathematics this half term, our focus has been number recognition, ordering and counting. The children have worked hard to secure their knowledge in numbers ranging from 1-20. Through nursery rhymes such as ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ and ‘1,2,3,5, Once I Caught A Fish Alive’, the children have explored a variety of engaging ways to use numbers and count everyday objects successfully.

Topic spring 1

Our topic for this term has been Animals in their Habitats. We’ve had themed weeks which has included a story to link into these themes. From under the sea to the depths of the jungle, the children have enjoyed learning all about different animals and where they live.

Spring 2

In Phonics, our Phase 2 group have been working hard to recognise all Phase 2 phonemes as well as starting to recognise graphemes and high frequency words. The children have been accustomed to blending CVC and CVCC words phonetically and are starting to form and write CVC words independently when asked. Our Phase 1 group are developing with their listening skills. They have been able to explore and recognise sounds in the environment as well as experimenting using their bodies and voices to make specific sounds.

In Mathematics, we have dived deeper into measurement, sorting and positional language. The children have explored capacity, measuring size, length and sorting by shape and colour. This has been a very ‘hands on’ term in Maths and the children have loved it.

In our topic, the children have become our very own little gardeners. Through role play and sensory interaction, we have explored planting, growing and extracting food from our allotment tray. The children have become familiar with key fruit and vegetable names as well as colours.

In Literacy, we have covered a range of exciting narratives all in theme with our topic, Growing Food. From ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ to ‘In the Garden’, the children have enjoyed using props to follow the stories as well as describing characters, writing key words and phrases and accessing practical activities based around the stories.
